The portrait of the priest and, probably, the father of the artist Grigory Kirillovich Levitsky (1697-1769), was painted under the undoubted influence of the art of Rembrandt, whose engravings the artist could get acquainted with in the early years of his life, in the house of his father, a famous Ukrainian engraver and collector of European engravings. Levitsky focuses his attention on an accurate and detailed characterization of a specific and, apparently, a well-known and close person to him. Unlike the works of Rembrandt, in Levitsky's portrait, real light clearly captures facial features and vigorously sculpts concrete, material, three-dimensional forms, leaving the background and upper part of the figure shaded.
